The anchoring principle
It doesn't hold the dirt above it. It planes into the ground beside it.
Most anchors depend on a cone of resistance — the loose wedge of soil sitting on top of them. The Load Lock works on the planing principle. As tension comes on the cable, the anchor rotates underground and drives sideways against undisturbed soil. That is how a 7 1/2 oz casting holds thousands of pounds.
Match the anchor to the ground
What is your ground made of?
Holding power is a function of soil, not just hardware. Pick the class that matches your site and we'll point you at the right anchor. If you are between classes, use a torque probe — 200 to 350 in-lb puts you in the Class 4 to 6 range where the Load Lock performs best.
Figures are from B&R testing in virgin soil. Holding capacity varies with site conditions, moisture and installation. Test on site where the load is critical, and involve an engineer for Class 8 ground.

Installation
Set in six steps with hand tools
No drilling rig, no concrete, no cure time. One person with a drive rod and a hand winch can set an anchor and tie down a structure in minutes.
STEP 01
Insert the drive rod
Slide the drive rod into the barrel of the anchor.
STEP 02
Drive to depth
Drive the anchor to the depth and angle the job calls for. Ease off once you meet strong resistance — repeated heavy impact fatigues metal.
STEP 03
Remove the rod
Pull the drive rod straight back out of the ground.
STEP 04
Backfill and pack
Fill the hole and pack it firmly with the drive rod so the ground closes tight around the anchor.
STEP 05
Set the anchor
Pull the cable tight with a lever, winch or jack. The anchor rotates and planes into its load-lock position against undisturbed soil.
STEP 06
Attach the frame tie
Connect the ratchet head to the structure with a B&R frame tie, bolted or wrapped, and tension the strap. Keep three full turns on the drum.
Complete the tie-down
An anchor on its own is half a job
Anchors resist uplift. Frame ties stop a structure sliding sideways on its supports. Leveling jacks hold it flat through freeze-thaw. Use them together.

Questions we get asked
How deep does the anchor have to go?
Deep enough that it is planing against undisturbed soil, which depends on the ground. In Class 5 medium-dense sandy clay a #68 is typically set at 30" and a #88 at 36". Softer ground gives less resistance, so the anchor goes deeper. Use the soil class selector above as a starting point.
How do I know what soil class I'm in?
A soil test probe reads sub-soil resistance without taking core samples. Torque readings of roughly 200 to 350 in-lb put you in the Class 4 to 6 range, which is where the Load Lock performs best. Lower readings mean softer soil and a deeper set. If the load is critical, test on site.
Do I need frame ties as well as anchors?
Yes. An anchor resists uplift — the wind trying to lift the structure. A frame tie stops the structure sliding sideways off its supports. On any mobile or portable building you want both, and you want the ratchet kept with at least three full turns of strap on the drum.
What does frost do to a set anchor?
Frost raises and lowers the ground through the season, which can slacken or tighten a strap. Check ratchets seasonally, loosen and re-tension as needed, and keep three full turns on the drum.
Can I buy just the casting?
Yes. Installers and OEMs who rig their own cable and hardware buy the bare Load Lock casting in #68 (LL680) and #88 (LL880). Same sand-cast aluminum alloy to ASTM B26-72, same patterns, finished in our shop.
